Another example of the modern skyscraper era, Torre Mercedes was the first modern skyrise on Paseo Colon. Its construction involved methods which hadn't been seen in decades, in order to excavate the underground levels and build up the glass tower, without damaging nearby buildings.
Initially the tower housed the central offices for Mercedes Benz Costa Rica, hence the name. Later rights to the tower were purchased by Scotiabank, and the name was changed to Scotia Tower. However the original name stuck, and most people remain with the Mercedes name.
