The Banco Nacional is one of the largest state owned banks in Costa Rica, and up until 2011 had the tallest building in the country (title owned now by Torre Paseo Colon).

This complex is actually made up of two buildings. There's a smaller building on the north end of the block which dates back to 1936, the original bank offices. In 1982, the 80 meter tower located on the south end of the block was built. The tower was originally a light brown concrete finish, but underwent renovation due to a corporate image change a few years back. During renovation, the concrete finish was replaced by aluminium panels, giving it the silver look it has now.

Throughout its life the tower has been hit by several major earthquakes, including Limon in 1991 (Mw 7.6) and Samara in 2011 (Mw 7.6). No serious damage was sustained in either event. Tall buildings tend to amplify movement as you go up, and those unfortunate enough to experience the quakes in the tower say that on the upper floors it was nearly impossible to remain standing, due to the violent shaking during the events.

On top of the bank is a helipad, which is abandoned.
