The new National Stadium, built in 2011 by the People's Republic of China, is the first modern sports arena of its kind in Central America. It was completely built by the chinese, with workers, materials and equipment shipped from China. It has 35,000 seats.

The original stadium, built in 1924, was demolished to make room for the new one. Only a small wall and lettering from the original structure was preserved, and can be seen on the western end of the stadium.
