Agua dulce, also known as agua de panela, is a sweet beverage made by dissolving unrefined cane sugar in hot water. The caramel contained in the unrefined sugar gives the drink a brown-greenish color, similar to a light tea.

It's consumed by many as a coffee substitute, at breakfast time. Although it's traditionally made with pieces of solid cane syrup ("tapas de dulce"), it can also be made with ground brown sugar.
